Joyce A. Smidley, chief operating officer of the Department of Family Medicine and the Bowen Research Center, received her masters degree in Family Studies from Indiana University, a bachelors degree in Education at Ball State University, and a Public Management Certificate from the IUPUI School of Public and Environmental Affairs.

Prior to joining the University, she was state director for Aging, with the Indiana Department of Family and Social  Services. Professional affiliations include the IUPUI Network, IUPUI Commission on Women, IUPUI Staff Council, American Counseling Association, Indiana Counseling Association, and Indiana Forum for Research Administration.

Joyce is an active member of the Clay County Preservation Society, the Poland Chapel Historical Society, and the Depauw University Festival Choir. She currently attends classes to complete a second masters degree in counseling psychology.
